Developing Your Internal Star Champions
Under this scheme, Butterfly Consultancy and Training can offer organisations in New Zealand the opportunity to deliver Outcomes Star training within their own organisation.
The Outcomes Star Licensed Trainer Scheme provides organisations with the license and the resources needed to facilitate the One Day Introduction to the Outcomes Star for their own workers. By developing one or more of your team to be an internal Star Champion, you will encourage engagement and enable the on-going development of staff practice.
Having internal Star Champions is particularly effective for medium to large organisations where there will be 50 or more staff utilising the Outcomes Star and/or for organisations that are in the process of expanding or experience regular staff turnover.
What it consists of:
- A license to train staff internally in the relevant versions of Outcomes Star (renewable annually)
- A train-the-trainer course
- Year one – two days facilitated and one day preparation time in year one
- Year two onwards – one-day refresher training OR two half-day mentoring sessions*
- The Outcomes Star Trainer manual with training content, hand-outs and other guidance on running an Outcomes Star training day – course materials have been developed by Triangle (Developers of the Outcomes Star), are reviewed regularly and are controlled by copyright
- Access to an email/ring back support service from Butterfly Consultancy and Training
- Regular e-mail updates from Triangle
What we ask for from your organisation
Organisations need an implementation plan and the time and resources to support this. We will discuss this with the management team or training department in the first instance. Organisations need to ensure that trainers have the capacity within their existing roles and responsibilities to enact their role as an Outcomes Star trainer and expertise source. As most star champions also have other responsibilities – we strongly recommend a ratio of one Star Champion per 50 staff utilising the Star (or part thereof).
Additionally, implementation is to be given priority in the organisation’s strategic activities and consideration will need to be given to project governance structures and audit/quality assurance systems once it is implemented.
Licensed Trainers / Star Champions need to have a training qualification or be able to demonstrate appropriate knowledge, experience and skills in training facilitation and staff development. Once trained – Champions need to be open to learning and adapting as they progress. We recommend an internal recruitment process to identify the right people and can support and advise organisations with this. Often, those with keywork experience are well placed to deliver Star training. People with training, evaluation or other backgrounds may choose to co-train with a practitioner. Trainers will need to complete an application form and be supported as applicants by both line and senior managers.
At the end of the Licensed Trainer course, trainers will be awarded a certificate confirming they are licensed to train within your organisation in the Outcomes Star. In very rare circumstances, where we are not confident of the trainer’s ability, we offer further support, including coaching and/or co-training. There may be an extra cost for this.
For Licensed Trainers / Star Champions to be effective:
You will need to ensure that an implementation plan is in place before your Licensed Star trainers start training internally. We aim to discuss your context with the management team/training department before the training and can offer advice. We recommend that manager sit in on Day 1 of the LT course to support effective ongoing implementation.
The Star Licensed Trainer course:
Aim: To ensure participants are competent and confident to deliver Outcomes Star training in their workplaces
How that will be achieved: Through a mixture of trainer delivery, reflective learning, discussion and questions, peer practice, observed practice, facilitator and peer feedback and self-assessment.
Structure of the course:
Preparation: Trainers are provided with the relevant version of the Outcomes Star and Organisation Guide as essential pre-reading for the course.
Day 1: Introduction to the Outcomes Star Programme – demonstration or explanation of each session by the Triangle trainer and reflection from trainees.
Before Day 2: Preparation and practicing training sessions (as arranged between trainees or staff at your place of work) and completion of tasks on the Star Online – about one day
Day 2: All participants deliver one or more sessions in small groups. This is likely to be Sessions 2 & 5 of the Outcomes Star Trainer Manual. The trainee reflects on their session and the Triangle trainer and peers then provide feedback.
