Supporting Change: Effective Client Support Work

Do you or your team work to support people to make positive changes in their lives? Maybe you work with young people, supporting their transition to adulthood? Or with people who are experiencing homelessness? Or with people who are experiencing mental health needs or need support with addiction? Maybe you are supporting parents to learn new skills or women who have experienced domestic violence? Whatever the support needs you are focussing on or the client group you serve, this course helps you to develop or refresh some core skills that are needed when working together with people to make sustained, positive changes to their behaviours or life choices.

Aims
This course can be delivered over one or two days. Depending on which you choose, we will cover all or some of the following areas:

  • The principles of client support work.
  • The principles of needs assessments.
  • The principles of support planning.
  • Techniques & skills for successful communication & barriers to communication.
  • Supporting positive change.
  • Applying these principles in your practice & day to day support work.
  • Understanding some of the models & theories behind needs assessment &/or support planning (2 days only) .
  • Effective assessments of client needs (2 days only).
  • Utilising motivational techniques to encourage positive change (2 days only).
  • Developing practical, SMART support plans (2 days only).
  • Understanding professional boundaries (2 days only).

Who should attend?

This course is aimed at all workers who undertake direct support work with clients as part of their role. It is applicable to staff who are new to the role (or are hoping to move into a client support role) & to those who want to expand, update or refresh their knowledge.

Staff that have direct contact with clients but do not undertake formal support work can also benefit from understanding the wider principles & elements of the support process (e.g. administrative roles; night staff; management).

This course is suitable for up to 16 trainees.
